It’s almost time for the garage sale!

The weather is improving and it’s time for people to organize garage sales to get rid of those unwanted objects that gather dust. You know what they say, “One man’s bric-a-brac is another man’s treasure!”

Have you thought about having your own garage or garage sale?

They can be a lot of work. Everything has to be priced. And you need to deal with people who are ready to roll and negotiate.

Are there any rules for hosting a garage sale in Tri-Cities?

Yes. This varies for each city. In Pasco, you MUST obtain a permit to hold such an event. In addition, sales are limited to two per year and cannot last more than two consecutive days.

In Kennewick, a permit is NOT required, but you must follow certain rules.

The sale must not last more than 5 consecutive days and 2 sales per household are authorized.

For the City of Richland, a permit is NOT required, and you can hold several sales per year.

As for residents of West Richland, a permit is NOT required and there is no limit to the number of sales a resident is allowed.

Many people get together and hold community garage sales at someone’s residence. This can be a way to circumvent particular rules in your neighborhood.

A few years ago, our friends at the Tri-City Herald researched garage sale rules for our area.

Are you a fan of visiting garage sales?

If so, there are plenty of places to visit to hold your “heads up”. For example, there is a Tri-Cities Yard Sale Facebook page.

You can also search for Tri-Cities yard and moving sales on Craigslist.

If you want to hold a garage sale in Tri-Cities, it pays to know the rules for your city.
